US to New Zealand travel with layovers, where will I need to pick up my bags?

July 16, 2009 - 4:46 am 2 Comments

I have a trip planned for NZ in about a month and I was wondering where and when I will have to pick up my bag that is check. I am leaving out of KCI on america west to phoenix, then from phoenix to LAX on america west again, then from LAX to Auckland NZ, then from Auckland to palmerston north, I am wondering will I have to pick up my bag at LAX to check it for an international flight, and then after that will I pick it up at Auckland where I go threw customs (I think) or will it go directly to palmerston north, my last stop?

basically if anyone knows how checked bags work for this kind of layovers, any help would be great, just want to be prepared.

Thank you.

It really depends on what the gate agent in KCI puts on the bag tag. When you check in bags, look at the code. It should read, from bottom to top, PHX, LAX, AKL, PMR

If it doesn’t have all these codes, then pick up your bag in the top airport listed on the bag tag. Most likely, that will be LAX because I’m really not sure if HP (America West) will automatically tag bags for Air New Zealand or Qantas.

If all are listed, then pick up your bag in Auckland, New Zealand. This is where you’ll clear NZ Customs. Most international airports require passengers to get their luggage and present it for inspection when first entering a country. Once you clear Customs in NZ, there will be an area to re-check your bag for the flight to PMR.

The only reason you’d have to pick up your luggage at LAX is if America West didn’t tag the bag for the New Zealand leg of your trip.

If your NZ flight number is listed on the bag tag, just walk out of LAX Terminal 1, make a right when you hit the street, and walk either to Terminal 2 (Air New Zealand) or to the Tom Bradley International Terminal between Terminals 3 and 4 (for Qantas and Air Pacific). There’s one UA flight at Terminal 7 that goes to NZ also.

can 16yr girl travel to new zealand, stay with boyfreind and his family which has just emergrate without visa?

July 14, 2009 - 3:47 am 1 Comment

freinds daughter is going to new zealand in nov 08.she will be staying with boyfreinds family, who have just emmergrated to new zealand. we thing the daughter is planning to stay longer than her ticket is booked for.what type is visa will she need?

A 16 year old will only be able to get a tourist visa, or if she is from the UK and is staying for fewer than 6 months, she doesn’t need a visa. If she is from not from the UK, but is from a visa free country, she can stay for 3 months without a visa. See: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/visit/visitors/quickcheck.htm.

For other circumstances (longer stay, non-visa free country) see: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/visit/

Even if she doesn’t need a visa for her designated stay, if she stays on beyond the departure date she has given to immigration upon arrival, she will be in breach of her visiting conditions.

EDIT:
One other point. As she’s a minor, the NZ immigration authorities will need to be satisfied that she will be adequately cared for in a safe situation. She should take a certified document from her parent or guardian giving permission for her to stay with the family in question. It should include a date up to which the permission is valid.

July 10, 2009 - 5:51 am 2 Comments

I am half South African and half Nigeria, but my dad is south African and i am traveling to New Zealand with south Africa passport, can i fly from Nigeria ?? because my mom is buying me ticket from Nigeria, what questions do immigration ask people holding visa waiver passport to new zealand at the airport ??

there are no direct flights to new zealand from nigeria or south africa to new zealand anyways thats no ur question yes u can travel from nigeria using a south african passport your actually lucky to be using a south african passport then a nigerian one because the immigration line is extremly long for nigerians. the line for every other country besides nigeria is short i used my american passport instead of my nigerian one because of this.

New Zealand Wellington Cable Car Jim Rogers 150 Country World Travel Adventure

July 10, 2009 - 3:53 am 1 Comment

Jim Rogers traveled to 150 countries over 150,000 miles in three years - follow his adventures here on FentonReport.

In this video Jim takes the Wellington Cable Car.

The Wellington Cable Car is a funicular railway in Wellington, New Zealand. It carries passengers between Lambton Quay, the main shopping street, and Kelburn, a suburb in the hills overlooking the central city, rising 120 m over a length of 612 m. It is widely recognised as a symbol of Wellington.

The line consists of 628 metres of mostly straight 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 in)-gauge single track with pine sleepers. The only curves are at the passing loop in the middle, at Talavera station. Except for the lowest part, the line rises at a constant grade of 1 in 5.06, through three tunnels and over three bridges.

The lower terminus is in Cable Car Lane, off Lambton Quay. The upper terminus is next to the Wellington Botanic Garden at the city end of Upland Road, Kelburn’s main street. There are three other equally-spaced stations — from Lambton Quay, they are Clifton, Talavera and Salamanca (also referred to as University), all named after nearby streets.

The Cable Car has two cars, which start from opposite ends of the line and pass in the middle. They are attached to each other by a 30-mm diameter cable, supported by 120 rollers, which runs round a pulley at the top of the hill. A 185-kW 550-V DC motor at the top of the hill drives the pulley. The Cable Car is a funicular rather than a true cable car: the cars are permanently attached to the cable, which stops and starts as required, while a cable car grips and releases a continuously-moving cable. Wheels on the south side of car 1 and the north side of car 2 have double flanges, while the opposite wheels on each car have no flanges, directing the cars to the correct side of the mid-way passing loop at Talavera.

Wich is the minimum qualification that i need to work in New Zealand on the travel industry?

July 8, 2009 - 6:59 am 1 Comment

I want to move to Nez Zealand but first i want to do a course that will get me a job.Any sugestions?

You might want to ask this in the New Zealand category…. it will help you in your application if you know the difference between the two countries ;o)

You could try doing a course at a college in NZ as a "way in" and then take your student visa and convert it to a working visa when you get a job. It’s a popular option.
